Let’s Talk about Sexual Purity

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

Despite popular belief, teenagers do want to hear what their parents have to say. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, a majority of teens surveyed said their parents have the greatest influence over their decisions about sexual purity—more than their friends or social media.

So, what is sexual purity? I believe that it’s a compilation of little decisions made throughout the day, such as what you wear, read, think, and do. No matter what your marital statis is, the Bible calls us to be sexually pure in both our actions and our thoughts. While it is challenging to implement in our daily lives, the result is profound peace and transformative growth in our faith.

Back in Paul’s day, the Corinthians were also grappling with this concept of sexual wholeness. They challenged Paul that if God created their bodies with sexual urges, why couldn’t they indulge them? Paul responded to their question with a question:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Paul makes it clear that our bodies belong to God. Even more, we are bought with a price: Jesus gave His life on the cross as a ransom for many, , which is the basis for God to accept us as His servants. If you’ve accepted this free gift of grace, then one day your body will be resurrected and glorified like Jesus—so you are called to honor it.

Discover two life-giving principles that can help guide your everyday decisions in your journey to sexual wholeness. Remember that God’s address on earth is your body, so whatever you do, you are united with Him. Are you living with this in mind?
