The Invitation is Clear

Just do it—go and make disciples!

”Engage in a way that makes people hungrier for the things of God.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people” (Mark 1:17).

In 1987, a major shoe company was gearing up for its first major television campaign, which included commercials for running, walking, basketball, and women’s fitness. The ads featured people of all walks of life, from children to seniors to hardcore athletes to morning walkers. The one thing the campaign was missing, though, was a tagline to bring unity to the messaging. And thus, the slogan ‘Just Do It’ was birthed. Not only did it inspire people to become their best selves and push beyond their limits, but it grew to become one of the most successful advertising taglines of all time.

I often wonder what would happen if we applied that same type of messaging in the church today. Would we see Christians rising to the challenge to become the best example of Jesus to those around them? Would people who have little or no connection to the church observe the zeal and passion in Christians around them and be inspired to learn more about God? Unfortunately, far too many Christians I know have gotten into the complacent pattern of attending church on Sunday and leaving their faith at the door when they leave.

I think Mark, the writer of the Gospel of Mark, would have a lot to say to those individuals. As an outspoken follower of Jesus, Mark’s sole mission was to convert people to follow Christ. His writings have a sense of urgency and action as he gives firsthand glimpses into the life and ministry of Jesus, who, in an incredibly short time, changed the world. And that same Jesus calls all who believe in Him and call Him Lord to proclaim the gospel of God and demonstrate the gospel’s fruit in their own lives.

This is the heart of the Great Commission—that you and I live out a genuine faith to others, speak the truth with zeal despite its unpopularity, and encourage others around us to become their best selves . . . in Jesus. The invitation is clear. Now, let’s “Just Do It!”
