Stepping Out in Faith

”Sometimes what we see on the outside is only a symptom of something deeper.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“‘On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.”’”
(Luke 13:10-12)

When my daughter turned 20, she wanted to go skydiving with me for her birthday. It was a big leap of faith for her—literally and figuratively! When the plane door opened, all that stood between her and the sky was that tiny step out into the open air. It wasn’t an easy step to take, but it was one that led to an incredible experience for her.

As believers, we are often called to step out in faith, despite the fears that hold us back. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, and fear of change can keep us from stepping into the fullness of what God has for us. Sometimes we grow so comfortable with the way things are, that we refuse to accept the possibility of something greater, something better, that God might want to do in our lives.

There’s no better example of this than the story of the woman in Luke 13 who had been bent over for 18 years, unable to straighten her back. Her condition wasn’t just physical—it was rooted in a spiritual issue. Sometimes what we see on the outside is only a symptom of something deeper. She didn’t just need physical healing, but a breakthrough that addressed the root of her problem. Jesus called her forward and invited her to step out of her place of discomfort, her place of hiding.

For this woman, the step forward wasn’t easy. It’s much like the way we feel when God calls us to bring our struggles into the light. It's hard to expose what’s been hidden and face what we’ve been running from. When you’re called to step out in faith, you have to take that first awkward step—just like my daughter did. And as you do, you leave behind the old season, the old patterns, and step into the new thing that God is doing. Jesus’ call is always active. He’s always working, and it’s up to you to respond to His voice.
