“‘But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.”’”
(2 Kings 5:11)
Have you ever reached a point in life where you realize you’re at a crossroads? You know something needs to change, but you don’t know where to begin or how to make the shift. God often brings us to places in life where we need to pivot, to shake off our old patterns of thinking, and adjust our perspective to align with where He is taking us. But here’s the challenge - we can’t carry old mindsets into new seasons.
When my son Josiah got married, he and his bride stepped into a new reality after they exchanged their vows. The words “I do” mark the transition, but it didn’t instantly change everything. It takes time for that new identity to sink in and for the old way of thinking—singlehood—to shed itself.
Consider the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5. Naaman was a highly respected and successful military leader yet, despite his success, he carried the weight of a disease he couldn’t control, leprosy. But God had a plan for Naaman, and it involved a shift in mindset. Though Naaman was accustomed to using his wealth and authority to get what he wanted, he realized he couldn’t force a miraculous healing through those means. Naaman needed a change of heart, not just a change in circumstances.
When we face a season of change, we often come with our own ideas of how things should unfold. We come with expectations, with old mindsets, and we’re frustrated when things don’t go according to plan. But God often calls us to a place of humility, to shed the pride of the past and embrace His way for us.
If you find yourself at a crossroads, unsure of how to pivot into the new season God is calling you to, you just may need to adjust your mindset by humbling yourself, letting go of the old, and trusting Him for what lies ahead. Remember, God’s plans are greater than anything you or I can imagine!
This year marks six years that I’ve had the honor of kneeling and having the late Dr. George Sweeting pray over me on my first day as the 10th President of Moody Bible Institute. I’m grateful for being able to serve with such a talented and committed group of people on mission to serve Jesus through our education, publishing and radio departments. What a privilege to be a part of this collective ministry that is impacting millions of people throughout the world!
