Our History
In 1926 Moody Radio aired its first broadcast on WMBI in Chicago. Respected as a bold and innovative industry leader, Moody Radio is one of the oldest noncommercial Christian radio stations in the U.S.
Moody’s first broadcasts featured live preaching, Bible teaching, and live music performed by Moody Bible Institute faculty and students. When Crowell Hall was built on the Chicago campus in 1939, the top floors were devoted to new studio space with balconies for audiences to watch the live shows. More than 75 years later, Moody’s famed Studio B is still in use, Chicago’s last surviving studio from the classic era of live production.
Moody Radio’s pioneering approach to gospel music launched the careers of many noted singers and composers, including George Beverly Shea, John W. Peterson, Wendell Loveless, and Donald Hustad. Today Moody continues its innovative and diverse musical programing, including its award-winning Internet channel, Urban Praise.
In the 1930s WMBI began recording and syndicating its programs by mailing them out on giant 16-inch, two-sided transcription discs. The 1950s brought reel-to-reel tapes, followed cassettes in the 1970s. Moody Radio’s syndicated programs became noted for their national influence; in 1944 Moody became a founding member of the National Religious Broadcasters.
In 1958 Moody purchased WCRF in Cleveland, Ohio, leading to expansion that now includes 36 owned and operated stations. Hundreds of other stations are Moody affiliates.
Moody Broadcasting Network became the first satellite distributor of religious broadcasting in 1981. Moody shows were beamed from the Crowell Hall studios to an orbiting RCA Satcom IIIR satellite, transforming the face of local Christian radio. Hundreds of stations across the country gained access to Moody programming.
WMBI-AM pioneered Spanish-language programming with “Radio Esperanza,” switching its Saturday format to all Spanish in 1980. Now part of a growing network of six stations and more affiliates, Radio Moody continues with 24-hour programming from its flagship station in Chicago, WMBI 1110 AM.
After eight decades of constant expansion, Moody’s radio ministry consolidated under a new name in 2008. “Moody Radio” reflects our broadcasting heritage and our future as a worldwide media creator and distributor. Moody Radio continues today as the largest network of Christian radio stations, affiliates, Internet stations, podcasts, and related programming.
